Wallum Study Group

In this section, the Cooloola Coastcare Wallum Study Group will feature plants and wildflowers to assist members and residents to identify and appreciate the local Wallum flora.

Wildflowers can be seen all year round on the Cooloola Coast, but during July, August and September they are at their most prolific with some spectacular colourful displays. However, to fully appreciate their beauty and variety it will require close inspection on the part of the observer.

On the wallum walk

In and around Tin Can Bay, Cooloola Cove and Rainbow Beach there are still large areas of wallum wildflower patches that exist outside the National Park system. Unfortunately, none of it is secured as it is either on private or unallocated state land. As coastal populations expands and more pressure is placed on governments to open up coastal land for development, these beautiful natural areas of heath, flowering shrubs and tall eucalyptus are slowly contracting and will be lost to future generations forever. As they disappear so will the birds, butterflies, animals and other associated bio systems. To protect our biodiversity for the future we urge residents to develop an understanding and appreciation of this incredible diverse habitat and assist in its preservation any way they can. The flowers described on this website can be found in the appropriate plant communities in and around the Cooloola Coast
