- Plant Name: Styphelia
viridas - Common Name: Five Corners
- Plant Family: Epacridaceae (Heath Family)
This plant family is found primarily in Australia and New Zealand. The Styphelia viridis plant is a fairly dense, woody, well branched shrub. It grows to 2m and produces tubular pale green flowers, with the flower lobes curling backwards. The leaves are stiff and pungent. Flowers appear in spring and autumn coinciding with new leaf growth making this plant quite attractive. The flowers are also good nectar producers, therefore popular with many birds. Besides growing in other locations such as peaty, granite sands at high altitudes in the Granite Belt, it is found in different situations of the coastal Wallum. In the Wallum, this species favours places where the soil is sandy, well drained and in some cases slightly peaty. Areas close to waterways, such as tidal creeks and in Banksia and Casuarina habitats are particularly favoured.
