Welcome to the first of two newsletters for year 2000. We also welcome our new Project Officer, Andrew Collins, who has been on the job since February. Andrew is currently establishing a work programme, which should see us through till October. Our public meeting, held in March was well attended. Many suggestions for Coastcare funding (closing date is May 30th) are still being considered. However, most suggestions were outside the funding criteria, but we are still hopeful of presenting a submission. Several planning meetings will be held throughout the year to organise projects. If you want to attend, please contact Jan on 54864378 or Andrew on 0407 763292 In March we received notification that our 1999/2000 Coastcare submission was successful. The main focus of this submission was an upgrade of the signage on the foreshore walkway and maintenance of previous projects. In April the group and Council signed an agreement to utilize this money within 12 months. After the autumn rains our aquifers will be full and the wildflowers in August should be spectacular. NATURE SEARCH
Several of our members attended workshops at Goomborian to learn how to participate in fauna and flora surveys. Sometime in the future you may see people wandering around with binoculars, traps, books, butterfly nets and spotlights, so don’t be alarmed, it will only be nature buffs collecting data. If you are aware of any unusual flora /fauna in our area this information would be appreciated. (54864378)

VIVENDI-COLLEX CLEAN BEACH CHALLENGE 1999-2000

It was wonderful to receive an acknowledgment for Tin Can Bay’s community work on the foreshore by winning the Environment Protection Agency Community Effort award in this competition. We were one of 92 entries from 6 Queensland regions and won the award for “a beach and community that shows outstanding accomplishment towards community involvement and ownership”. The challenge is now to win the BIG ONE- so let us all make an effort to keep our foreshore clean.
